Legal and Compliance Officer

Job Summary

The Legal and Compliance Officer will be responsible for providing sound legal advice, ensuring regulatory compliance, and managing legal risk across the organisation’s operations. The role requires a commercially astute professional with a strong understanding of Nigerian laws, regulatory frameworks, and corporate governance requirements, particularly within a regulated business environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide timely and accurate legal advice to management and business units on corporate, commercial, employment, and regulatory matters.
  • Ensure the organisation’s full compliance with applicable laws, regulations, guidelines, and industry standards, including those issued by relevant regulators.
  • Draft, review, negotiate, and manage contracts, agreements, policies, and other legal documents to safeguard the organisation’s interests.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor compliance policies, procedures, and internal controls across the organisation.
  • Conduct periodic compliance risk assessments and audits, and recommend corrective actions where gaps are identified.
  • Monitor regulatory developments and advise management on the impact of changes in laws and regulations on the organisation’s operations.
  • Liaise with external counsel, regulators, and relevant government agencies on legal and compliance matters.
  • Support corporate governance activities, including board and committee meetings, statutory filings, and maintenance of corporate records.
  • Handle dispute resolution matters, including pre-litigation advisory, litigation management, and alternative dispute resolution processes.
  • Provide compliance training and legal awareness sessions to staff to promote a strong compliance culture.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Law (LL.B); BL qualification and call to the Nigerian Bar are mandatory.
  • Minimum of 3–5 years relevant post-call experience in legal practice, in-house legal/compliance, or a regulated industry.
  • Strong knowledge of Nigerian corporate, commercial, employment, and regulatory laws.
  • Proven experience in compliance management, contract drafting, and regulatory engagement.
  • Membership of relevant professional bodies will be an added advantage.
